Interpretative Practice of the Flute Repertoire (Baroque to the Boehm System)


DAY 1 – Foundations of Flute Technique

Topics:

  • Breath management

  • Sound projection and tonal control

  • Attacks and articulation

  • Velocity and virtuosity

  • Technical foundations for expressive playing

Repertoire / Pedagogical Material:

  • Marcel Moyse: Tone Development and Articulation Studies

  • Andersen, Gariboldi: Etudes

  • Paganini (arr.): Virtuosic studies for flexibility and agility


DAY 2 – The Baroque Period

Topics:

  • Baroque notation and performance practice

  • Ornamentation and improvisation

  • Affections, rhetoric and stylistic characteristics

  • Historical instruments vs. the modern flute

Repertoire:

  • J. S. Bach: Sonatas and Partitas

  • G. P. Telemann: Fantasias and Sonatas

  • Additional Baroque repertoire suitable for modern flute


DAY 3 – The Classical Period: W. A. Mozart

Topics:

  • Classical phrasing and structure

  • Balance, clarity and articulation in the classical style

  • Cadenzas and stylistic choices

Repertoire:

  • W. A. Mozart: Flute Concertos and chamber music

  • Classical-era chamber repertoire for flute


DAY 4 – The Romantic Period: The Rise of the Virtuoso Flute

Topics:

  • Evolution of the flute in the 19th century

  • The Boehm system and its expressive possibilities

  • Romantic aesthetics and technical demands

Repertoire:

  • Beethoven: Serenade Op. 41; Sonata (transcriptions)

  • Schubert: Variations Op. 160; Arpeggione Sonata (transcriptions)

  • Carl Reinecke: Sonata “Undine”, Concerto, Ballade

  • Kuhlau: Sonatas and Fantasias

  • Briccialdi: Fantasias and Concert Pieces

  • Theobald Boehm: Selected works and studies


DAY 5 – The French Flute School & the 20th Century

Topics:

  • The Paris Conservatory tradition

  • Color, articulation and phrasing in the French school

  • The transformation of flute repertoire in the 20th century

Repertoire:

  • Fauré: Fantaisie Op. 79

  • Dutilleux: Sonatine

  • André Jolivet: Concerto, Incantations, Chant de Linos

  • Additional French and modern repertoire


General Structure of the Masterclass

The masterclass will consist of two components:

  1. Thematic Lectures / Demonstrations
    Each day begins with a structured presentation addressing technical, stylistic and historical aspects of the assigned repertoire.

  2. Student Performance Session
    Students will perform works of their choice.
    These performances will serve both as repertoire study and as practical illustration of the day’s topic.
